Coke Commercial-Are all bigots really Conservatives?

I shared the Coke ad on my facebook profile like many others. A friend of mine who enjoyed the ad and its message, but couldn’t understand why everyone who responded with bigotry was branded as being a Conservative. She tried to Google the tweets that followed after the infamous coke commercial and found that there were comments filled with hatred towards Conservatives without any proof that all those bigots were really actually Conservative. Now, this friend of mine is a lovely woman, and I understand that we as humans could differ in our political inclinations and as part of my ideological framework, I have to accept and respect that difference of opinion without being reductive by terming everyone who is a Conservative=racist/bigot/white. I personally detest being   pigeonholed into one term or another. I hate the idea that if you are White, then you must also be Conservative, and if you are non-White, then you cannot possibly be Conservative. Or if you are making bigoted comments, you must therefore be a Conservative. These are not mutually exclusive. So I understand my friend’s frustration at the rapid hatred fired at the bigoted comments following the Coke Commercial on Super Bowl night that it MUST be…it HAS to be all Conservatives.

I also have to accept that although Conservatives attract majority White votes but that is not to deny that there is no Ethnic make up for Conservatives. I know for a fact at least in Canada that there are definitely many Ethnic supporters and Ethnic elected officials who are right-leaning.  I mean how else could we explain the Conservatives winning a landslide in Canada? (oh Right Mass rigging, but that’s a total aside). We can see that the voter bank of the Conservatives in the US is Primarily Non-Hispanic White (check link here again). What this chart proves is that there is just enough colour in the Conservative mix to be termed racially diverse, but it just isn’t enough to really affect decision making, policy shift to challenge the status quo of the White Conservative mandate. I also won’t deny that many policies and bills passed by Conservatives are generally racist and anti-multiculturalism. That happens because there are some deep seeded attitudes and beliefs that are part of the ideological framework, and because of a thing called White-privilege that makes you blind/unaware/not in tune with the struggles of minorities.

At some level there is some truth that your political alliances/preferences do define your ideologies and your framework, but the political process/affiliations are a lot more complex than simply ideologies and policies.  In fact, prior to 2002, most Muslims voted Republican in the US for many reasons, economics being one of them. Having worked in enough election campaigns in BC, Canada myself, I know first hand that in Ethnic heavy constituencies/ridings, Conservatives run Ethnic candidates to split the ethnic vote. It optically looks great, but it also beats having a White Candidate lose to a Non-white Candidate from any of the other parties. The game is to gain the most seats in the House and sometimes that gamble works. Unfortunately, sometimes the skin of your colour is enough to determine your voting alliance over actual policies.

My friend’s frustration posed a challenge to me when she said that her Google search showed more tweets about the reaction to the racist/bigoted comments and not the original tweets of bigotry. I, for one  enjoy a challenge, especially one that doesn’t require much by way of actual physical labour. So I took to the twitterverse and tried to find the bigots cited in all the publicshaming articles. My research showed that some of those users were now either sending protected tweets or had retroactively deleted their old tweets. So, I took my search a bit further. I looked for #cocacola #fail and lo and behold in all its glory I was shown the ugly face of racism rear its head.

I have compiled for your pleasure print shots of the comments hurled in the name of American homogeneity and preserving the purity of the American Race (yeah sounds oddly familiar to the infamous words uttered not too long ago in Europe). But, I do take my friend’s words seriously, I am truly curious whether all those tweeting their hatred for the true depiction of a colurful and multi-ethnic America were really Conservatives? Perhaps, what might be truer is that these people really have no political affiliation, rather an affiliation to ignorance and racism.

Well found two who are definitely Conservatives

I also found this article: which is by a Republican.. http://allenbwest.com/2014/02/coca-cola-ad-super-bowl-americans-brand-hm/ but he is NOT White, proving my point about enough ethnic support within the conservative folds.

The thing about the internet is that it is addictive. I have now expanded my search from #CocaCola #Fail to looking up the names of the trolls mentioned in the public shaming articles and I keep coming across some serious racist gems. My head is about to explode.

I honestly can no longer be searching for each and every bigot out there and wasting more of my precious time. If anyone is further interested check out the following links: http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/coca-colas-multi-lingual-super-bowl-ad-inspired-a-racist-mel

I have not yet confirmed whether all these bigots are conservatives, but all I know is that all of them are RACIST, IGNORANT, FULL OF THEMSELVES, GOOD FOR NOTHING FOOLS.

This hashtag that proves that they are IGNORANT!

I think I am done for today!

It is that time again!

It is that time again when I like to put my weight behind something or someone I believe is worthy of putting my weight behind!

From the early days of arriving in London, UK, I have been involved with an amazing organization. Pearl Education Foundation is an organization that provides FREE English, and IT classes to men and women of all backgrounds. Their motto is “From the margins to the mainstream”. What does being from the margins mean?

pealr

There are many things I can be, but a major aspect of my life is that I am defined as an immigrant. No matter how much I try to escape that word, I am forever etched as an Immigrant-albeit a Modern Day immigrant. The modern  immigrant doesn’t necessarily look like the earlier generation of immigrants. I speak English, I am fluent in modern-day slang, well-aware of popular culture, I dress “Western” with slight ethnic adjustments, and have only a slight accent to clue anyone into my ethnic background. I have spent more years of my life in Vancouver, Canada, than I have in my birth country.  I went through the earlier stages of settling into my new life about 16/17 years ago when I first moved to Vancouver. At that time, unlike many others, I was very lucky to already be fluent in English, and did not have any need for ESL or TESOL classes. Of course the transition was not easy, but it wasn’t impossible.

Since then, I have lived in New York City, and adjusted to the fast-paced life there. Recently, I moved to London, UK. At times I felt alien, often lost in translation-because believe it or not British Slang is a lot different than American or Canadian slang. I like to think I have adjusted well. I have often thought what if I was a woman in a foreign land, unable to speak English and had no family or social ties to my new land? It is a scary thought. Starting my life anew in New York City, despite the many advantages of an education, fluency in the language, complete capability of using the computer/internet and the courage and freedom to move around and find my own way through New York, I remember being scared. I depended  on my husband to help me plan out my routes. I would wait for him to approve of the destination as being “safe” in order for me to go and wander on my own. For an independent girl, this was a huge blow!

When I moved to London and started volunteering with Pearl Education Foundation, I met many women who came and attended our English classes. I saw how some of them had zero ability to speak English. Some of them had lived here for over 40 years and only now after their kids had grown up had the courage to learn English for themselves. I met women who were victims of domestic abuse, and Pearl Education Foundation was their first step to independence. I met older women who came to learn English after having put up a fight to attend the classes-just so they could connect with their grandchildren. I met men from countries like Afghanistan, who sat in the same room with women and came to learn the language. I saw young mothers with their new born children soaking up knowledge like a sponge. In one of the centers, I saw young students from European countries, with dreams of making it big in London, attending their English classes. What lures all these people to these classes is that they are ABSOLUTELY FREE! They are for anyone and EVERYONE to join. There are no tests, no limitations on who can join. People can bring their children. All they have in common is a desire to learn and become a part of the greater British community. They all want to be productive parts of a productive society.

pearl

More dedicated than the people who attend the classes, are the volunteers. All of them committed to teaching their students. There is no monetary benefit to them from teaching these classes, They prepare and plan despite limited resources and teach their students. They are like a Fountain of water, pouring all their knowledge into the thirsty vessels -their students. Words are not enough to describe the emotions, and/or the power of seeing this organization in motion. Every time, I have attended a class, I have become teary-eyed. Every student is inspirational. Every time, I feel gratitude for not being lost in translation, for being able to get on the tube read the signs, ask the questions and get to my destination. I couldn’t imagine a life of being alone in a foreign land, unable to speak, share, or ask for directions or even go to buy milk at the grocers. I would be utterly depressed.

Pearl Education Foundation has given hope to so many lives. It has brought the gift of language to these otherwise invisible people and made them visible! That is what it means to be From the margins to the mainstream. You don’t have to take my word for it. Her Majesty the Queen recognized the work Pearl and her CEO has been involved in and the difference it has made to hundreds of lives.  In 2012, Durdana Ansari, the CEO for Pearl Education Foundation was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her hard-work. Pearl needs Your support to continue its work and to keep its doors open to everyone. I urge you all to take the time to check this organization out at http://www.pearleducationfoundation.com or on twitter @pearleducation or on facebook and get to know the volunteers, the CEO, and the organization. Please look deep into your hearts and donate generously to this wonderful organization.

“Black man’s murderer got away with murder”-hardly ever the headline!

I feel an immense rage reverberating through my body—!! Just read that the only ethnic Juror (B29-Maddy) on the Zimmerman case has come out claiming that she knows that “Zimmerman ‘got away with murder’ for killing Trayvon Martin and feels she owes an apology Martin’s parents”. Well, thank you for your apology as that undoes the colossal mistake that you made and the years of oppression and mistrust! Aghh! I am so angry, I can hardly see the screen and hardly type because my hands are shaking in anger. So, I am sorry if what I say in the next few paragraphs make no sense at all. Image

This proves there was so much wrong with this trial–Really don’t care, if someone says it had nothing to do with race, it had a lot to do with race. Zimmerman’s legal team went out of their way to play on the black is dangerous stereotype by painting him in the same manner.  In the original call, Zimmerman is asked by the dispatcher what the ethnicity of the kid is and he says he is “black” (1:03).  The story is about race because it is a white man suspecting a black man of being dangerous. The man has bragging rights for walking away from murder—Not sure how the jurors will live knowing that because of their verdict, there is a guilty man walking around free to kill again!

and this is why the Jury system is so very dangerous!
“Zimmerman concedes he shot and killed Martin in Sanford on Feb. 26, 2012, but maintains he fired in self-defense.
“That’s where I felt confused, where if a person kills someone, then you get charged for it,” Maddy (Juror B29) said. “But as the law was read to me, if you have no proof that he killed him intentionally, you can’t say he’s guilty.”

“As much as we were trying to find this man guilty…they give you a booklet that basically tells you the truth, and the truth is that there was nothing that we could do about it,” she said. “I feel the verdict was already told.”

Law is seldom just black and white (no pun intended)-it is the application of that law that makes it hold any merit or value. A crash course in the form of a booklet is not the best  way of deciding someone’s fate. An ordinary person may not have the knowledge or understanding of the law to its extent (especially when it is presented to them in a shortened version)! Plus, human beings are ALMOST NEVER able to make decisions without other personal factors affecting how they relate to a certain story. We don’t live in a vaccum! The all white panel could NOT have felt the empathy, nor understood the threat the young black man felt as they have not been subjected to years of suspicious scrutiny–It is precisely because of the lack of feeling that scrutiny that we had Juror B37, making a statement on Anderson Cooper’s CNN show, that she believes Zimmerman’s “heart was in the right place” when he became suspicious of Martin and that the teenager probably threw the first punch. This is a classic example of the woman accepting the mainstream narrative that if he is black, you probably should fear him and the likelihood of him throwing the first punch is of a higher probability–never mind that all this testimony was one-sided from the killer himself, since the other witness was buried six feet under anyways!

Juror B29 is a blatant example of groupthink in action in our society. Groupthink “is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people, in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an incorrect or deviant decision-making outcome. Group members try to minimize conflict and reach a consensus decision without critical evaluation of alternative ideas or viewpoints, and by isolating themselves from outside influences.” That is exactly what happened here. Juror B29 could have continued not agreeing and they could have deliberated some more, but hey who wants to be the sore thumb standing up against the grain right?

THIS is also the precise reason why we should NOT stop talking about such atrocities. If it feels wrong, it probably IS wrong! And why should the Trayvon Martin story concern any of us, especially if you are not black? Well, because if you are a minority, you better understand and recognize the system of oppression that exists in the form of White Privilege. And why should it concern you if you are white, because there are enough people out there who will use the colour of their skin (white) to use their white privilege whereby putting all of the good white guys and white girls  (and I believe there are More of them than the haters) as part of a big group of people who are complacent. This only adds fuel to the already existing racial tensions that exist in the world and creates further mistrust. Oh and also simply because this sort of injustice is ABSOLUTELY wrong and immoral.

I am not black, but I can relate to the anger my fellow black friends are feeling. This anger comes from a place of being under the lens for far too long as a minority- where my religion and my faith have been put to trial the same way as the colour of their skin. And even though our struggles are different, but the resulting pain and anger is a actually very similar sentiment!!

In the words of rap group N.W.A “F*** the Police,” the law agencies, the jurors, the system of oppression, the oppressors!

NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE for Trayvon Martin Today

Today is a dark day in the collective history of Americans and the American Judicial System. The killer of Trayvon Martin is found innocent on all counts and is a free man walking. Race politics still exists in America and it is painful to watch it surface its ugly head again. Trayvon, is now being put on trial for being black and a “thug”–everyone seems to have forgotten he is the victim. Victim blaming is the worst form of legitimizing injustices, it exists in rape cases and it exists in race cases.

Below are some of the highlights of the different commentary on the Zimmerman Trial and my thoughts on them:

no J,nop

“Since it was Zimmerman who stalked Martin, the question remains: what ground is a young black man entitled to and on what grounds may he defend himself? What version of events is there for that night in which Martin gets away with his life? Or is it open season on black boys after dark?

Zimmerman’s not guilty verdict will be contested for years to come. But he passed judgement on Trayvon that night summarily.

“Fucking punks,” Zimmerman told the police dispatcher that night. “These assholes. They always get away.”

YES: what would allow a person of colour to stand their ground and get away with it? Because stand your ground didn’t work in this case: –different state–affluent neighbourhood–black father and white teenager (oppressor)

and this case:

no J,nop

“Fla. mom gets 20 years for firing warning shots”

same state-same law-no deaths-Different verdicts–

This case was a clear case of defending herself against her oppressor-whom she had already taken out a protective order!

No Justice, No Peace: What I’ve Felt and What Is Next in the Wake of the Trayvon Martin Verdict

“This means organizing to change dangerous laws like the “Stand Your Ground” and the “Stop and Frisk” policies as well as heartless gun laws in our country.”

I can’t agree more–the reason this verdict is dangerous is that it allows for illegitimate use of Stand-your-ground laws and self-defense by any person who is a bigot-gives them the legitimate license to kill so long as there is reasonable suspicion that they are possibly under threat.  All these laws have serious repercussions for people of colour…better believe that being Black in America just got super ugly—

Image

To those who defend this verdict by saying Zimmerman wasn’t white–read this:

White Supremacy Acquits George Zimmerman

“Watching Zimmerman in the defense seat, his sister in the courtroom, and his mother on the stand, one can’t deny the skin color that informs their experience. They are not white. Yet Zimmerman’s apparent ideology—one that is suspicious of black men in his neighborhood, the “assholes who always get away—” is one that adheres to white supremacy.”

Yes, this is why White supremacy matters–this is why race is a key card here-Trayvon is now on trial for being a “thug” -his life’s record being thrown in the public to malign him after his death–it feeds back into the stereotype that black people are to be feared and therefore it is okay to kill them–don’t believe me-check this craziness on twitter:

Image

The comments in this article are extremely racist–for all those who are faint of heart-your heart will bleed.

“Post-Racial” America Finds George Zimmerman Not Guilty of Murdering Black 17 Year Old Unarmed Trayvon Martin

and for the dose of the REAL truth: ,Martin Bashir tells it like it is—could it be because he shares his name?

Image

and in the guardian: ”

“George Zimmerman acquitted in Trayvon Martin case” –

Image

“O’Mara, Zimmerman’s lead attorney, said his client was “very, very happy” with the jury’s decision. Asked if Zimmerman was scared for his future, O’Mara said: “I think he’s going to be great, I think he’s still worried and hopefully everyone will respect the jury’s verdict as they should and most have said they will, and we’ll take it day by day.

“I think he wishes he could wave a magic wand and get his life back. He has to be very cautious and protective for his safety because there’s still a fringe element out there who have said they want revenge.”

The propaganda for the safety of Zimmerman only means more reasons for him to use “stand your ground” law as he now legitimately fears for his life and can use that as “reasonable” reason to believe he is under threat to possibly kill again. Yeah, parents of children of colour should be very concerned!!!

and if you want to know WHY and HOW this could have possibly happened? check out this link that gives you “Legal Insights on the Zimmerman Verdict”

“state’s 2005 “Stand Your Ground” law removed a person’s duty to try to run away in the face of danger before using deadly force, created a presumption that such force is lawful and immunized those who kill in self-defense from prosecution and private lawsuits.

The law provides that a person who claims to have killed in self-defense can seek a court ruling, before any trial, that they acted legally, but Mr. Zimmerman and his lawyer decided against that option and presented his case directly to a jury.”

and this should scare us because the Law truly is blind and it is dependent in the hands of those defending or prosecuting. It is a game of words–and whoever gets the last word in-wins!

This is the reality- there is no point in hiding our heads in the sand. We must tackle racial politics head-on rather than playing ostrich.

Al-Qaeda Inspired? Really?

bbc

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-23155029

This news at first had me in stitches….Which was an interesting response, given that I usually get mad constantly hearing news that continue to sell the image that Muslims are all terrorists and Islam is a religion of terrorism. So, either I have grown thick skin, or internally accepted this, or just no longer give a hoot about it..Either reason is a bad thing—It means, the media has succeeded in making me accept its false propaganda, or I have become apathetic, and that is never a good thing.

Why is it that any violent acts if termed terrorism must only be in reference to an Islamic or Muslim pretext? Why can’t terrorism be just terrorism- devoid of race, religion, ethnicity, or any other false dividers—There are no excuses for terrorism, no matter what the terrorists use as the reason for their inspiration. We must challenge these notions head on!

I think we need to take a look at why violence is so attractive to young people? Let’s take a quick look at our culture shall we?
We have our kids growing up with Violent video games, violent movies, the hero of the movie is always blowing stuff up and coming out unscathed…the repeated ads to join the Army because well men in military are HOT and macho and it is the epitome of man-hood—not to mention, our authorities repeatedly prove to these young men that violence is the ONLY way to get stuff done—so if Afghanistam, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, South Korea (insert other countries) don’t comply, we wage a war on them and drop drones!!!!

Yeah, I wonder where they get “inspired” from—

It is time we call terrorism for what it is, rather than trying to define it in reference to Islam only. Terrorist organizations have all existed throughout history, heck some of them even no longer are known as terrorist (Nelson Mandela is a classic example).

These two guys who are arrested may have very well been inspired by the Boston Marathon bombing and therefore the far-stretch of calling them Al-Qaeda inspired. What they really are copy-cat criminals. Not Al-Qaeda inspired.    Al-Qaeda as an organization has been obliterated since 2001…It is more an ideology that has been used to justify violent acts by many across the globe…These two probably don’t even know what that ideology is. So let’s stop calling it Al–Qaeda inspired. The only reason the Tsarnev brothers’ pressure cooker tactic is being copied is because the media went mental in covering them for a couple of weeks. We have idiots all around us, and some of those idiots are just looking for their fifteen minutes of fame. This has now been made possible by our sensationalizing media. There is a HUGE difference between information and sensationalism. This is nothing, but pure sensationalism.

…So, let’s look at violence as violence–anything that intends to harm and cause life loss is terrorism and I don’t care what anyone says to justify it, it does NOT justify it.  We all have a responsibility in how we pass the information on and how we accept it. We need to analyze and not fall prey to immature sensationalism. This is real life, not a movie!

Now, I am angry!! So much for my hearty laugh reaction…
